I had a customer at UAB ask about options to run CBCs on both human and mouse samples... below are some options based on conversation on the Purdue Cytometry List. After posting this question, it also occurred to me that eBioscience has absolute count beads suitable for this: 123count eBeads. I suspect that and a TBNK panel would do the trick cross-platform.
The best way to do CBCs without a Coulter counter would be on a low end Cytometer measuring stoned cells for CD45 and CD14 with counting beads. If you need to expand the panel you can add a B cell and NK cell marker. In this way mouse or human would depend on the mAbs used. Best SP

Hello!
There are two categories: impedance-based instruments such as the Hemavet machines, and full-sized optical/impedance-based instruments such as the Sysmex XT-2000iv. The former is cheaper and small, but less accurate than the latter. Both can do a variety of species, depending on software configuration. You can also do reasonably accurate CBCs with a volumetric cytometer or True Count beads from BD.
These aren't cheap instruments. If you have an animal facility with a diagnostics lab at your institute, chances are they have a CBC instrument.
(Not sure on specific vendors for refurbished Coulter Counters, but I'd check Atlantic and Biodirect.)

We use the hemavet from Heska but I believe they have a new instrument now.

We had an old counter that supported human and mouse with different cards you’d slide into the front of the machine…or maybe we ran mouse samples with a horse card – I forget now. They stopped supporting the consumables (which we could have just made in-house), so we had to upgrade to the new AcT diff. Make sure she checks on that before buying an old one.

Hi Suzanne We like our Hemavet 950LV from Drew Scientific. It does up to 5 species including Human. Kind Regards Jen

Check with Abbott Cell Dyn or Siemens ADVIA hematology analyzers. I believe the Cell Dyn has a Vet package and I’ve heard that the Siemens is used in some Vet offices.

Suzanne,
We have a Medonics impedance instrument that has veterinary and human capability. They are lower cost ~10K but have comparable accuracy with our Coulter impedance counter AcT diff 2. Coulter also sells card for the AcT to run mouse samples but we find that mouse samples tend to clog the Coulter.

Hi Suzanne,
I have run both undiluted human and diluted 10x mouse blood on the same Sysmex CBC instrument.
Best,
